Bookish Pet Peeves That (Mostly) Annoy The Living Wontons Out Of Me

Annoying Bookish Pet Peeves

I'm pretty positive that every bookworms got a few pet peeves, after all we are a pretty irritable species (kidding. I'm kidding, please put away your pitchforks) So let's talk about some of my bookish pet peeves. (Trust me there's a lot more than what's in this post)

When people try to read over your shoulder...

I hope I'm not alone in despising this. Cause it drives me crazy... I don't know something about people peering around your head, breathing down your neck, when your TRYING to read... Just annoys me to no end. The only way to avoid this is to:

  1. Tape a sign to your book and the back of your head that says "Don't Read Over My Shoulder" in doing so you risk getting odd looks, but you shall most likely be left alone.
  2. Find an alone place. Don't read in public where other humans can annoy you (preferably no cats either, as they enjoy sticking their butts on your books so you can't read)
  3. Just kindly howl at ask them to go away.

When especially evil humans interrupt your precious reading...

Actually this doesn't really bother me. Normally when I'm reading, my inner monologue is screaming, so talking to someone is almost always welcome. Though sometimes I will become an angry turnip. It really depends on my mood, and which part of the book I'm on.

Losing your place in the book your reading...

*gets feeling of dread just from thinking about it* Ugh I hate hate when this happens. It's even worse for audiobooks, sometimes I accidentally eject the disk or on my phone skip to a chapter. Then I spend ages just trying to get back to my spot. And since I'm an impatient little thing, I normally get really really close, but not wanting to wait an extra minute to get back to my spot, I skip ahead a bit and SPOIL myself.

Not having a bookmark when you desperately need one...

I've used many things as bookmarks. Most common: hairbands. But then my hair is everywhere and it blows all over my face. I used to dog ear pages (still do occasionally) *horrified gasp* but now I use folded-up pieces paper. But sometimes if I forget to check for writing, the graphite or even worse, pen ink rubs off on the pages, and that is dreadful.

When the movie leaves out your favorite scene you've waiting years & years to see on screen...

I understand why movie sometimes change or leave out stuff, but noooooooooooooooo.... Why couldn't that ONE part be in the movie?

Telling yourself you're not gonna finish a book, then spoiling yourself & deciding you do need to finish the book & wondering for the rest of eternity what it would have been like to finish the book without knowing the huge spoiler...

This one is pretty specific to one book: Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. So I decided I was DNFing Everything, Everything, then being the stupid turnip I am, I decided that I'd go a read some reviews and I found out about the whole, Everything Everything spoiler crazy mother faked that her daughter had serious disease so she could keep said daughter trapped in a very white house forever. I then decided to finish the book, cause after that huge plot twist spoiler how could I not? I was intrigued. Now I shall wonder forever how it would have been to find out the plot twist from the book instead of expecting it

When series end & you have a huge gaping hole in your chest...

I hate it when series end, it's just so heartbreaking...

What are your bookish pet peeves? Is there one particular pet peeve that annoys you the most?

Why I Generally Don't Read A Ton Of Book Reviews

Why I Generally Don't Read Book Reviews

Book reviews are arguably the solely most important posts when it comes to book blogs. However I don't read a lot of them. Unless I already have this book on my TBR, or the cover/title catches my attention...

Chances are I'm gonna have a quick peek at the synopsis and move on.

There's just so many new book reviews in my bloglovin feed everyday that it's becomes sorta overwhelming, and I don't really feel like reading all of them.

However there are some bloggers' reviews that I will always read.

For example Cait @ Paperfury and Emily @ Loony Literate. Their reviews specifically standout to me because their unique senses of humor and how entertaining I find their reviews.

I also really like it when book reviews have GIFs (I say GIF like gift how bout you?) both of the bloggers I mentioned below use a ton of these lovely moving pictures.

Why BB-8 and a bunch of ickle chickens, I'm not sure.... They just felt right. (plus I've been waiting to use this GIF for a while)

Now I'm definitely not telling anyone to change their reviewing style because of this post, after all these are just my preference.

Another weird thing about my review reading habits is:

if it's a book I know I will read or am reading I will avoid all book reviews about it like the plague (which is something you really should be avoiding, it's quite nasty) This is mostly because I like developing my own opinions on a novel beforehand, than I'll take a look at other peoples thoughts. (I know kinda weird)

Most of the time if these plague-ish book reviews pop up I bookmark them or if the post is in my bloglovin feed I'll save them to a collection called spoilers. I enjoy reading reviews after finishing the book, and if I'm planning to write a review, after I've written my review.

I know I'm a bit odd (that fact is quite well known) but I just wanted to share my book review reading habits with you guys.

So am I alone in this relatively odd habit of not reading a ton of book reviews? Do you or do you not read a lot of book reviews?

2016 ARC April | The ARCs + Week One Progress

The ARCs & Week One ARC April

Soo I'm late on this post, possibly cause I have the worst memory ever... (It's definitely that) I really need to get on my ARC reading, that's the main reason I joined challenge (but since I'm reading like 6 books at once I'm reading each one pretty slowly) If your interested in joining ARC April, info (from Read.Sleep.Repeat) can be found below. [ARC April is a challenge hosted by Read.Sleep.Repeat]

(This Info is Taken From Read.Sleep.Repeat) ARC April, like ARC August is all about YOUR personal goal in regards to YOUR ARCs! This was made as a “low pressure” but maximum benefits kind of challenge and Octavia really want to continue that! The only real rule for ARC April is any books you count towards the challenge MUST be an ARC. It can be an e-ARC or physical ARC. It can have a 2017 release date or an overdue date of 2010! As long as it is an ARC they won’t judge you or take that accomplishment lightly.

*Update* If you decide to read a finished copy of an expired eARC that is FINE. HOWEVER this is straight honor system. Meaning they TRUSTING you to be honest that you read a finished copy of an ARC you were once granted. Ok? Ok.

Sign ups will open below March 15th and will close April 15th. Sign up and find more info here.

(This Info is Taken From Read.Sleep.Repeat) Traditionally Shelly and Octavia create a linky and just let you participate until your heart in content and pick a random winner from that initial sign up post. But Octavia wanted to try something different this year! This year sign ups will close April 15th and there will be NO exceptions made. In addition they are going to implement a point system! Now remember the goal is to make a dent in those ARCs of yours but they understand that a prize is always a helpful way to get a goal accomplished right?! Right! So the point system will go as follows:

1-4 ARCs read for the month = The Bronze Reader Level

5-9 ARCs read for the month = The Silver Reader Level

10-15 ARCs read for the month = The Gold Reader Level

16+ ARCs read for the month = The Diamond Reader Level

Now each tier puts you in a different prize bracket.

Bronze =  Shelly & Octavia are headed to BEA this year and Octavia's sure they could score some pretty cool totes and swag for this tier!
Silver = $10 Bookoutlet gift card. This is open INT!
Gold = $20 TBD gift card This is open INT!
Diamond = 1 ARC signed IF POSSIBLE of your choosing, from Book Expo America 2016. This giveaway is open INT and requires further clarity and details:

1. Authors that require a ticket MAY NOT BE SIGNED. The cost to get a ticket is really expensive and those lines are normally the craziest. They will do everything they can to get you the book of your choice signed but in the event that is not an option please understand they truly did try their best.

2. Once BEA releases the list and schedule of books that will be at BEA they will post said list on their blog. Once a winner is selected THEN, and only then, will they be able to submit their prize request. We all hear rumors of what “might” be at BEA and they don’t want someone getting all worked up and excited about a book just for the publisher to show up and it only be a sample. Cool? Cool.

3. This is open INT. Meaning they will ship it to you no matter where you live. They will supply a tracking number but you must be PATIENT. There’s a 90% chance they won’t be able to ship it until Octavia back home. Octavia will not ship anything while Octavia's in Chicago since she has no idea if she’ll have the time.

{How I'm Doing At The Challenge So Far}

  • ONCE UPON A DREAM 0% I haven't started this one, but I'm extremely excited to.
  • PLAYING DEFENSE 63% I started this one awhile ago but have yet to finish it. It's pretty good so far, but honestly nothing too special.
  • MASTERPIECERS 18% Basically the same story for this one as Playing Defense.
  • LOVE FORTUNES & DISASTERS 5/5 So far this is the only ARC I've finished. I received it cause I'd signed up for a Love Charms & Catastrophes Book Tour but hadn't read the first book, so I got sent both the second book and the prior. The best possible way to describe this book was cute. Extra freaking cute. I loved it especially cause sometimes I need some fluffiness.
  • LOVE CHARMS & CATASTROPHES 16% This one's pretty interesting so far!!!
  • VIPER IN THE FOREST 0% This is actually the first hardcopy ARC I've ever received which is beyond exciting! I love retellings so this one has a lot of promise.
  • ALICE TAKES BACK WONDERLAND 7% Awhile back I tried reading this book, but I didn't really get into it, but I'd like to give it another chance.

Emerge "A Fresh Take On Mermaids Mythology" {ARC Review}

Emerge by Tobie Easton Review

I've always loved the mythology of mermaids, so this book with it's gorgeous cover and promise of mermaids instantly captured my attention. (the whole little mermaid thing didn't hurt either, I'm a real sucker for retellings)

AMAZON|GOODREADS|BOOK DEPOSITORY

Title: Emerge
Author: Tobie Easton
Series: Mer Chronicles #1
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Retellings
Source: I received an arc from  Month9Books in exchanged for an honest review

Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid but she’s never lived in the ocean. War has ravaged the seven seas ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality. Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk.

So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right? That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with him, the harder it is for her to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

I can’t swim. No matter how sparkly and tempting that water is. No matter how it glistens in the sunlight, ripples in the California breeze, or reflects the swaying palm trees. One quick dip and my legs will go poof. Besides, I’m late for P.E. Again.

The story starts off simple, but twists into a much more complicated plot.

In the beginning it's just about a girl named Lia who's secretly a mermaid and her hopeless crush on a human boy she can never be with, however with the entrance of the mythical, dangerous siren song the stakes get a lot higher and the story begins to move much faster.

The romantic relationship plays a huge role in the plot. Most of the romance was sweet and I did really like the chemistry between Clay and Lia, however at times it kinda got on my nerves. Though all together it was cute and I really ship the two.

My favorite part though of this story was most definitely the mythology.

Some parts of the story felt a tad info dumpy when they were explaining the whole siren thing, but it wasn't too noticeable. I specifically enjoyed how the story of The Little Mermaid was incorporated. Also the siren thing was pretty cool and don't forget the whole secret mermaids-living-on-land society.

Have you read Emerge? Do you like mermaid mythology?

"I Have A New Favorite Disney Moooovie!!!!" Zootopia {Movie Review}

Zootopia Movie Review

Zootopia was terrible, haha no, kidding. It was lovely, and I really enjoyed it.

TRAILER|WEBSITE|ROTTEN TOMATOES

Title: Zootopia
Director(s): Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush
Movie Studio: Disney
Genres: Mystery, Action, Comedy

From the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where various animals live and thrive.

When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law.

Determined to prove herself, Judy jumps at the
opportunity to solve a mysterious case. Unfortunately, that means working with Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a wily fox who makes her job even harder.

It's called a hustle, sweetheart.

Judy Hopps was an incredible main character. With her bubbly personality, and optimistic outlook on life she was impossible not to love (also her voice actor is Ginnifer Goodwin *squeals* As you can probably tell, yes I like Once Upon a Time and shhhh no spoilers I’m only on season 3) Also Nick Wilde!!!!!!!!! He is an awesome sassy, sly, smart fox. (I do love the sassy characters) Honestly what’s not to like? (I may or may not ship them *hint it’s may*)

My favorite thing though is most definitely the world, it is so beautiful and well built.

I do hope Disney plans on returning to it! The design and especially the districts were amazing. Each one was unique and gorgeous. Like I mean Tundra Town, Sahara Square, Rainforest District, Little Rodentia, the Burrows, were all so intriguing and wonderfully designed and put together. I really think I’ll need to watch this one again to absorb all of this complicated and stunning world they have here.

But the design of Downtown Zootopia was my favorite, the buildings were just so fabulous.

Also the wonderful blend of species was done so well (though one has to wonder, where are all the non-mammal species?) and the dynamic between the predators and the prey was handled very nicely.

I loved how the filmmakers tackled real life issues about race and stereotypes in Zootopia.

They weren’t to heavy on their message, but at the same time it got across. I think it was really clever, and it is one of the reasons I liked this movie so much.

The mystery!!! Oooh what can I say without spoiling you peoples… That it was amazing? Like I can’t even describe how awesome it was. The plot really exceeded my expectations by like a freaking mile.

Spoilers
That villain though… Never saw that coming, I thought maybe the mayor, but never the assistant mayor AKA glorified assistant. Also Nick with his glasses and his cup of coffee was like the best thing ever, especially after they’d arrested the mayor and he was just hanging out.

And that scene after the report, gah so heart-breaking. Also I really liked the scene with Giselle at the protest, her mini speech was so beautiful *tear* {end of spoilers}

The theater was packed, I mean packed. I literally had to sit in the very very front row. So I was kinda in this weird, lying down, leaning, position the entire film so I could watch the movie without killing my neck, but I quickly forgot about it cause this movie was that good.

Also THAT ANIMATION! So purdy!!!! *melts into a puddle*

Like I mean all dat fur! (furs really hard to animate) I really do wish we’d seen more of the world, I think we really need a sequel. Also the real life references were hilarious (haha targoat and pig hero 6)

The song from Shakira was nice. It fit well with the story and was pretty, though it was no let it go (thank goodness don't need that nightmare again)

I think I may have just exhausted my bank of positive words.

I have none left… All in all Zootopia is a wonderful film, and really worth watching (beware the fanart though) I’d recommend it to almost anyone, this film isn’t just for the children, people of all ages can enjoy this lovely story of a bunny with big dreams.

Have You Seen Zootopia? If So Thoughts? Also do you have a favorite Disney Movie?

{Quartz Gazette #4} I Got A Drawing Tablet + A Ton Of Carry On Quotes

Quartz Gazette April 2016

So not much has happened, life's been rather boring. Well February 13th was my birthday, but quite honestly it didn't really change much (beside my age) and oh I did get a drawing tablet. I've sketched out an outfit design and I think I'm gonna take a stab and sewing it. Wish me luck!

Also this post is like 200,000 miles long cause I haven't posted one in a while. I apologize for that...

Special Extra Long Quote From The Summer of Chasing Mermaids

Rules

If everyone followed rules
As they were written, as they were said
You wouldn't be allowed to vote.
The rule of thumb, as the saying goes, comes from the old rules
In which a man was allowed to beat his wife
So long as the implement was no wider than his thumb.
If everyone followed rules
My family would not own a cocoa farm
And I wouldn't be looking you in the eye, women to women.
Lucky for you, someone defied rules.
Lucky for me, someone spoke out against them.
Lucky for my friend, the little blond mermaid-
Wait he wasn't lucky.
No one defied the rules for him.
No one stood up and said that boys marching in the mermaid parade are perfectly acceptable.
That HE is perfectly acceptable
And acceptably perfect.
Rules are rules, yet still
trumped always by kindness and human decency.
Let. Him. March.
