Winter by Marissa Meyer Review

Where do I even began.... Winter was everything I hope for and even more, all eight-hundred pages were perfect. *Warning this entire review is most likely just going to be me gushing like the fangirl I am* I seriously can't even, *argh* everything was amazing. *Pulls out dictionary filled with ecstatic fangirlish gleeful words* Time to put this to some good use.

Title: Winter (The Lunar Chronicles #4)
Author: Marissa Meyer
Series: The Lunar Chronicles #4
Genres: Fantasy, Retellings, Sci-fi
Source: Purchased

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won't approve of her feelings for her childhood friend--the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn't as weak as Levana believes her to be and she's been undermining her stepmother's wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that's been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters? Fans will not want to miss this thrilling conclusion to Marissa Meyer's national bestselling Lunar Chronicles series.

Wolf made a strangled sound, pulling everyone’s attention toward him as he lifted a handgun from the crate. “It’s just like the one Scarlet had.” He flipped the gun in his palms, running his thumb along the barrel. “She shot me in the arm once.”

This confession was said with as much tenderness as if Scarlet had given him a bouquet of flower rather than a bullet wound.

I feel like almost every single character went through some serious character development. For example Kai gets a lot bolder and shows his brave side, we finally get to really know Winter, we see more of Jacin and so on. But Levana was definitely the most built up, though I can't say why without giving out some pretty major spoilers, I will say however that she creeped me out multiple times.

Before this novel we only got small glimpses into
the corrupt country on the moon

Also Luna, before this novel we only got small glimpses into the corrupt country on the moon. However in Winter we learn so much more about Luna, and that was quite exciting. Because in the rest of the series it was always the central objective {and basically like the most important thing ever} but we never really got to know that much about it.

So I really need to gush, so spoiler time I guess?

Reading Fairest made me think, would I want Levana to die? And I worried a bit over whether Levana's fate would satisfy me. But I agree with how Levana died, I'm not saying it didn't make tear up a bit, after all the whole psychotic killer queen thing isn't really her fault. It's just there is no real way to redeem her, and I don't think I'd like it if she was just kept prisoner, and I really wouldn't have liked it either if she was . So the way she died was fitting.

Adri and Pearl, I'm not quite sure if I'm quite happy with their ending, but I suppose it's the only right thing to do. I just hope the money/ordeal on Luna will make these two better people.

One question I hoped to have answered by the end is what is to happen to the Lunar mutants and special operatives. While this question was sort of answered it wasn't really. From what I could discern undoing the procedures would be risky and probably pretty hard. And though Ze'ev/Wolf seemed to be doing quite fine {after becoming a mutant} not everyone has a Scarlet to help. Also from what we saw it seems like most of the other mutants and operatives were a lot more violent than Wolf was.

Now on to the parallels between Winter and Snow White. There were of course the glaringly obvious, but there were a few I didn't expect. Such as Levana glamouring herself as an old hag and giving Winter an sour apple petite poisoned with Letumosis, plus the suspension tank being like the glass coffin from Snow White. I think those really did make the story more fun to read.

I like the way at the end Cinder had made up her mind to turn Luna into a democracy, I guess I secretly suspected this was going to happen from like the very beginning, after all Cinder isn't exactly the queen type. But Marissa did manage to fool me for a little while there, I did think Cinder would stay queen, till she told Kai her plan to abolish the monarchy of course.

Liam Kinney, I liked this guy. And I'm happy that now his's Cinder's guard. I have to admit his disgust for Iko is slightly amusing, however I think the two of them would make a wonderful couple.

So much to talk about!!!! I like how Cress finds out that Thorne likes her, you know the whole he being forced to kiss a Lunar girl, and Cress getting mad then finding out that the girl had glamoured herself as Cress. I just thought that was really really cute.

Oooh ooh! Let's not forget Letumosis, not cool Levana not cool, but sounds just like you to do such an awful thing. Though great foreshadowing Marissa.

I also like how she made the overthrowing of Levana really really hard, made it feel more real, and like every time something was going right something was also always going wrong.

Last but not least in the spoiler department I'd like to discuss the couples.

Let's start off with Wolflet {Wolf Kesley/Scarlet Benoit} I like where they ended, I feel like their relationship was really tested in Winter, and it was nice to see them together again as they were separated for most of Cress. Overall I think they are really adorable together.

Cresswell {Cress Darnel/Carswell Thorne} I think these two make one heck of a duo. They're a match made by the stars. Even though these two {specifically Thorne} literally drove me nuts the first 75% of the book. Despite the fact that they basically spent the entirety of Winter convincing themselves they should be together {Thorne thinking he wasn't good enough for Cress and poor Cress trying to ignore Thorne because he was basically ignoring her and  trying to convincing herself he was no good} even though they were very clearly in love, I still adore this pairing.

Wincin {Winter Hayle/Jacin Clay} Okay this couple is magical, just pure magic. These two are like the cutest thing ever. Even though I only really saw this couple together for a single book I can already tell they are made for each other. Also the backstory is adorable and Jacin is literally the best boyfriend/guard ever. {Kai is still the better boyfriend though, dur}

Kaider {Kaito/Linh Cinder} Side note: Kai doesn't have a last name, how odd. Saved the best for last, Cinder and Kai will always be my favorite. They are simply the cutest, the most adorable. And stars above he bascially proposed at the end! I'm just sad we didn't get to see much of their relationship as you know, there were certain complications keeping them apart. I hope that wedding of a century in the upcoming Stars Above will be theirs! {End of Spoilers}

Stars Above {yes I'm officially totally adopting that term} I was a teensy bit worried that Winter wouldn't live up to my expectations, because after all it is the FINAL book in like my all time favorite series. But I shouldn't have worried. I have to say Winter is the best book I've read in all of 2015, perhaps even in my lifetime.

The ending . . . Endings of my series are always painful, and Winter was no exception. But I felt that the end was exceedingly well executed and well done. Sure there were still a few a things I wondered a bit about, but I feel like most of the plot lines were nicely tied up.

I am so sad that The Lunar Chronicles have come to an end, after being in love with them for nearly three years it makes me sad too know there won't really be more. Sure Stars Above is still coming, but Winter is truly the end. The Lunar Chronicles is thee BEST series I have ever read, I highly highly recommend you read it.
